Major Requirements
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Our program prepares you for various professional and leadership options in the molecular, environmental, and health fields and in research, biotechnology, and more.

Pitzer Biology Major Requirements
Regardless of whether students choose a Biology major, minor, or combine it with another major, they will study foundational principles, develop hypotheses and test them, and learn to critique original research.

Scripps Biology Major Requirements
The Biology major aims to help students develop the skills to effectively evaluate biological issues and innovations and to become leaders in research, science education, biotechnology, and more.
What our students say
Innovators in the Making
“Health has a huge impact on pretty much every area of a person’s life, and it’s fundamentally something everyone should be able to understand and access. Any disparities are really important for us to fix, and I definitely see myself being a part of that.”

Local Habitats
Natural habitats are just a short walk away–and offer perfect nearby spots for conducting fieldwork.

Research Opportunties
Conduct research with world-class faculty from Pitzer and Scripps colleges through our Department of Natural Sciences.

Study Abroad
Complement your understanding of biology through study abroad programs, like Pitzer’s Summer Health program in Costa Rica.

Lab Spaces & More
The opening of the 65,000-square-foot Nucleus West facility has expanded our lab, classroom, and collaborative spaces.
Biology FAQs
Our program prepares you for a wide variety of professions in healthcare, ecology, biotechnology, genetic engineering, forensic, education, and research fields. The areas of academic and industrial research are open to those who pursue a Ph.D. in the discipline.
Our biology major aims to provide you with skills and knowledge to effectively engage and evaluate biological issues and innovations in the wider world and to prepare you as a leader in research, biotechnology, or health-related career fields.
You’ll learn the foundational scientific principles and findings in the field of biology. You’ll develop critical thinking and analytical skills by developing specific hypotheses and designing controlled experiments to test those hypotheses. You’ll also learn to read, understand, and critique original research articles.
