Funding Opportunities

Summer funding often comes from one of three sources.

two students wearing goggles and gloves work with lab equipment

DNS Funds

The Department of Natural Sciences funds many students with various awards and fellowships. This is the most common mechanism for summer funding for students at the DNS.

Faculty Funds

Some faculty have external funding from private or government sources, which may be available to fund summer students. To learn more, you can talk with individual faculty members.

Career Offices

Pitzer’s Career Services Office and Scripps’ Career Planning & Resources Office coordinate summer funding. Inquire with your campus office regarding deadlines and requirements. Usually, proposals are due very early in the spring semester.

How to Apply for Funding

Once a faculty member has agreed to serve as your project mentor, you must submit a formal application. Application instructions are provided on the application cover sheet.

Please submit your application cover sheet and supporting documents to Velda Yount at vyount@scrippscollege.edu by Friday, February 23, 2024. The DNS Budget Committee will evaluate these applications and notify all applicants of their decision around March 29. Students will have until April 10 to accept or decline their awarded funding.

If you are a CMC student:

Once you have been offered and accepted a research position at the Department of Natural Sciences, regardless of the specific award/fund, in order to receive your $4,500 stipend, you must apply to the Sponsored Internships and Experiences (SIE) application found here: https://www.cmc.edu/career-services/sie-program. Please log in to SMApply via your CMC credentials, complete the application along with your award letter from the Department of Natural Sciences. Each student is awarded one stipend per summer. Therefore, please only request $4,500 within your budget from the Department of Natural Sciences, as no additional funds can be requested within the application. If you have any questions regarding the SIE Application, please contact Garineh Kouredjian at Gkouredjian@cmc.edu.
