Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation

Casa Colina provides comprehensive inpatient/outpatient acute medical rehabilitation, with emphasis on spinal cord injury and pulmonary rehabilitation. Volunteers can participate in the Outdoor Adventures Program, patient care departments, or clerical assistance.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

CHOC assigns volunteer roles based on the current needs of the organization along with the volunteer’s availability, interests, and skill sets. Currently, our highest needs are shifts scheduled Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Evening and weekend volunteer roles are limited.
Requirements: Must commit to a minimum of one year and to a regular scheduled shift once a week (3–4hrs). Must dedicate a minimum of 100 hours service annually. Dress code; Two-step TB Test. Background check.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

Service opportunities are year-round. Volunteers provide special services to patients and families. Many of the volunteers work directly with patients through a variety of opportunities such as: escorting patients to hospital appointments, playing with patients in waiting rooms, assisting in hospital playrooms, and sometimes reading at the bedside. Volunteer application only open for certain dates.
Requirements: Must commit to two years of service with a minimum of 100 hours per year, with at least two 4-hour shifts per month

Clinical Care Extender
COPE Health Scholars offers individuals interested in health care professions with unparalleled experiential education in a health care environment. Our programs are tailored to allow high school, college, and professional school students to interact with health care professionals and explore career opportunities in the allied health professions, nursing, medicine, and health care administration.
Our unique programs provide unprecedented direct patient care experiences in clinical settings. Our programs are designed to allow pre-health professionals to interact directly with health care professionals and to explore potential career opportunities in allied health, nursing, and medicine.
Requirements: Serve a minimum of 4 to 6 hours per week, accumulate a total of 280 hours; most students take approximately 15 months to complete this minimum hours requirement, however others complete it earlier by volunteering more shifts per week. Huntington Hospital

The college student volunteer program provides students with an opportunity to experience working in a hospital environment and to provide needed services and assistance to the hospital patients, employees, and visitors. The hospital also has the Preceptor program, which is a three month, upper-division pre-med program in which students come in one morning a week and spend one hour listening to cases and another 1–2 hours going on rounds with a medical resident, an intern, and medical students.

Lestonnac Free Clinic

Lestonnac is a free clinic for low-income dental and medical patients. Much of their work is centered on efforts to prevent and manage diabetes. Volunteers are mainly responsible for updating and filing patient charts, and with substantial training, volunteers can also take vital signs, assist with physicals, and conduct glucose and urine analysis. Volunteers also have the opportunity to shadow physicians in different fields of medicine, such as family practice, general surgery, pediatrics, and dermatology.
Requirements: Commit to a minimum of 12 hours per month for at least 6 months.

San Dimas Community Hospital allows volunteers to support patients, visitors, and staff while gaining valuable experience in a hospital setting. Volunteers provide assistance across various departments to help improve patient care and hospital operations.

UC Irvine Medical Center is rated among the nation’s best hospitals. The College Student Volunteer Program offers positions on nursing floors, the cancer center, the ER, and more. It is very popular and highly competitive, so interested students should apply early in advance.
Requirements: Be available to volunteer for one three-hour shift each week between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday for the first 35 hauls. You must be able to commit to a minimum of 100 service hours.

UCLA Medical Center Care Extender Program

The Care Extender Program provides opportunities for volunteers to experience healthcare, from a clinical perspective, through patient contact and volunteer involvement. Care Extenders gain first-hand experience on the role of healthcare providers by volunteering in various departments throughout the medical centers. Care Extenders are trained to assist Medical Center staff, who, in turn, are able to share their personal experiences with their volunteers.

Volunteers work directly with patients and families by providing individual patient support, providing caregivers respite to allow the primary caregiver some time to run errands, go to doctor’s appointments, etc., assisting with bereavement care, and helping with office work such as mailings, or helping with special events.
Requirements: Commit to one to four hours per week of patient care volunteer service for a minimum of one year. Must attend six to nine hours of training classes to volunteer.

Vitas Healthcare, Hospice Care

Volunteers provide medical, emotional, and spiritual support to the terminally ill and their families. The programs seeks volunteers who can devote volunteering to visiting patients, providing respite relief to caregivers and running occasional errands for patients and families.
Training is provided in hospice philosophy, caring for the terminally ill, and grief education.
